DOTA 2 will be free-to-play -- "with a twist"

Postby BBeyonD._. » 20 Apr 2012, 12:07

Finally, the mystery about whether Dota 2 is either gonna be free-to-play or pay-to-play is finally solved. Now some gamers would think that making Dota 2 free-to-play is a bad idea, well they got a point too. Of course having a free-to-play game has a pros and cons as well as a pay-to-play game. But free-to-play isn't really such a bad idea. Think of your friends and other people that want to play the game so bad as well you.

Undoubtedly the game all DotA fans have been waiting for is to be Free-to-Play with an unexpected "twist", if sources from Polygon are to be believed.

In a shared "yet to be released" podcast interview by Seven Day Cooldown shared early with Polygon, the man behind Valve, Gabe Newell, revealed "It's going to be free-to-play -- it'll have some twists, but that's the easiest way for people to think about it,"

How Valve was going to market Dota 2 has been the subject of furious discussions ever since the original inception of the game. However, this news may come as not much of a surprise considering the many findings of CyBorgMatt which seemed to hint at a In-Game Store of sorts.

Newell went on to state that despite being F2P, the Dota 2 model would be significantly different from the existing models implemented by many other games.

"In a sense, think of individual games as instance dungeons of a larger experience, if that makes sense as a concept."

Soon to be updated for more information about the twist..

This was expected, but I'm not sure I approve. There's something about games taking this "Free to Play" approach correlating with the game itself seeming more of a lowbrow operation. What if Left 4 Dead was FTP, but you had to pay for guns? It just makes the game itself feel restricted. I also extremely dislike the idea of skins in this game, if it's ever going to happen... It's just too.... League of Legends. I don't like it, the whole reason for DotA is to be itself and NOT these alternative MOBAs.

I don't approve.

I prefer a game with serious players, ie those who purchase the game.
If the game is f2p like HoN currently is, the not-very-serious players will join the serious players and ruin their games.
If the game is f2p like LoL is, it'll just become a boring mainstream pack of crap.
I want a game you have to earn to play.

Not to mention that our community will most definitely turn to crap.

That's my worst fear.

Though honestly, I don't want to be pessimistic.

The "twist", I suspect, will be Valve's way of keeping full-on retards away from the game. I also like the idea of changing access based on how useful you are to the community...mainly because I already have 5 successful hero guides and 2 Playdota.com Guide Spotlight awards :D

But seriously, I think it's a great way of encouraging players to create useful content to help other players get better at the game or simply enjoy it more thoroughly through streams and videos.

The twist will be valves way to make money, because they cant just ship f2p game and live from air ...
By twist Gabe probably thought that game will be f2p with ingame store, Steam workshop or some other "twist", and most certainty player will have all hero roster available in every game (not like in LOL and HON - freemium).

I think they'll be doing it will have premium one-time payment to seperate who wants a good matchmaker and the non-paid ones to a public matchmakers filled with random, most of the time irritating people like the awkward MM in the beta now or aka almost-no-support-priority from valve. if this is true, we may as well all pay for it :D

also note that there is a system Gaben hinted and my speculation are close to this

Since there's absolutely no way they can break the game like they did TF2, I'm keeping optimistic as well.
