LoL to DOTA 2 Transition?

Postby epedemix » 04 Sep 2011, 23:44

Ello, I have been spending the past 6 months playing LoL, and despite what others say about the game, I have been having quite a bit of fun with it. I played WoW for a very long time, since vanilla infact, but I got pretty burned out with it after cataclysm xpac dropped. My question is this, since I play LoL, and I just reinstalled WC iii today to play DOTA Allstars (wasnt that good at it), do you think I will have a hard time making that transition?

The general principle of LoL and WC Dota is the same, but a lot of differences. I am very unfamiliar with the characters, the balance, the items, and hotkeys(plays a big part for me, I am not a clicker). I have every intention of leaving LoL for DOTA 2 when it is released. Should I keep on practicing on Dota allstars? Is it that much intuned with DOTA 2?

From what I can tell, it's not necessary to play the original DotA to get into DOTA 2. It'd be helpful, but you don't have to if you don't want to.
I haven't played DotA in a long time. When I got back into it, it was a little painful. But I can tell DOTA 2 will have many improvements, over DotA and League of Legends. Valve wants this game to be entertaining for newcomers, as well as long-time gamers. I've been playing League of Legends for a long time too, so I know how it feels.

Take in mind that DotA is not newcomer-friendly. There is like NOTHING that tells you what to do. Not suggested items; no ranking levels, more than 100 heroes that you don't know, messed shop for anyone who isn't used to it...
Only thing you may do (or try) is to join the "Only Noobs" games in hopes there are only real noobs (even if they pown you, it should be more balanced).

If you want to be quite "Pr0" when DotA 2 comes out; playing DotA is the way to go; since it will be the same game, with the same heroes and the same items; but you can have fun learning in DotA 2 instead of going back to DotA to learn.
Take in mind that Valve will do as many things as possible to help newcomers in DotA 2; when you have no help at all on DotA.

So... Your call. You will probably be a little "lost" in the LoL > DotA 2 transition; but I'm pretty sure Valve will come out with quite good solutions to help you easily and fast.
Just play War3 DotA if you feel like doing so. Personally I moved from it to LoL because two reasons: friends were playing LoL, and I got used to the game-finding and UI improvements. However I still find DotA to be way more fun to play.

If you feel like doing so, you can check this: http://www.playdota.com/heroes
You can check all heroes and their skills there; even if not for playing DotA itself, to start knowing them for DotA 2 or look for a couple favourites for you.
If you feel like playing Warcraft 3 DotA, host a game yourself in singleplayer, and start by getting used to the shops. Check the items they sell and you will get an idea: "Low Basic Items", "Support Items", "Defensive Items", "Agresive Items", "Orb Items" (you can only have 1 Orb effect on you).

^There is an in-built tips function for some heroes in DotA, actually, but it's pretty basic and not very comprehensive.

I don't think that will work well.
HoN is probably more complicated than the original DotA.
That depends on the player though. LoL is for simplistic players, while HoN is for hardcore gamers. DotA, as well as DOTA 2, will be in the middle. Which is why it will be awesome!

I think changing your game to DOTA (2) is a big thing especially if your use to LoL.
I think it's worthed, and allways good to have some practice before it comes out. Go for it.

hahaha had to make a account to quote this....
HoN isn't more complicated then DotA only thing different besides looks, eng among other things
In truth HoN is easier then first DotA. All hotkeys are QWER over every hero having different ones. Shop is all 1 over many. They now have ingame guides and what skills to level up.
Besides HoN was mainly a port of DotA with small improvements so how does that make it harder ~_~...

For me I played DotA for years, was a mod in Clan TDA for awhile. Played a lot of HoN, even played LoL with Guensoo or w/e his name is (fyi he sucks at the game) LoL teaches you lots of bad stuff in the true DotA play style. Took about a month break from HoN to play LoL when I went back I can't tell you how much worse I was at HoN..

So to OP if you want to get better for DotA 2 play HoN or DotA.

No idea what are you talking about. HoN is a clone of dota. Its much more user-friendly so it will be easier to learn HoN than DotA. Gameplay is similiar, it should be good start before DOTA2.

Additionaly i suggest using this mod.

I once tried HoN, and I had a very tough time. Not just ingame, but just starting a game seems a bit complex. Also, the layout of items and whatnot? Terrible!
And like you said, LoL was actually different. HoN is a mere clone, so it's uncreative. Also, as many others have mentioned, the community is trash too.

Oh look! It's this discussion again!

Anyway, it's easier to learn DotA than HoN for a LoL player.

I was Lo0L player, first tried dota and then hon. i didnt 'feel' dota totally, gave up after few matches. HoN was much easier to start for me, playing for ~month now.

Well yeah, thing is: DotA doesn't have a learning CURVE so much as a learning CLIFF.

Based on people that have D2 beta keys and played LoL before that, you shouldnt have problems to switch, D is learnable very fast.

The people who are saying to try HoN before you get into Dota2 are right. It will be easier to pick up than original DotA and will help you adjust to the difference between LoL and DotA.

Just don't play casual mode, it's nearly the same as league.

Dazzle is right, being a original DotA player it would be alot easier to switch from HoN to DotA 2, Now LoL is a different story, i play LoL and it will help you 0 amount with gearing up for DotA 2, so much stuff is different because Guinsoo wanted a kind of different game.

If you want to learn about DotA 2 before it comes out and you play LoL, i suggest going to heroesofnewerth.com right now and downloading it. Otherwise try and figure out DotA 2 when it comes out.

I never played Dota. My interest for moba games came with LoL. From there on out I've expanded to HoN and even RoI with the intention to start playing Dota 2. In fact I'm really excited about it. I'll have to do the same transition

The single reason I have for not playing HoN is because I'm sick of unlocking shit with e-money that takes an assload of time to get. I had enough of that in LoL.

It really depends on the player, every player can transition from one game to another with ease, however for some it will be difficult. I really can't tell you exactly how it feels to transition from LoL to DotA because I've played dotA then I switched to LoL. When I transitioned from DotA to LoL, I already have an advantage over other LoL players because I know the game mechanics already. I'm not trying to show off but the first week of LoL I literally didn't lose. Enough with the path I went to, My friend who is fairly good on LoL tried DotA/HoN but he did not know what exactly was going on, DotA is fast paced compared to LoL. There are also a few new concept you have to grasp, one of them is denying your own Creep , it's pretty self explanatory, you deny the creep, what happens is that the other player only gets half of your own creep exp.Another one is Tower denying, again same as creep denying but instead you're denying a tower. Junggle monsters DOES NOT give you mana regen or Damage over time buff. The concept of runes is different than that off LoL, runes spawn at each river every 3 minutes. "Roshan" aka "baron" doesn't give buff but instead gives you an item that revives your hero when it dies(1 time use only). There are a lot more concept that you have to learn and get used to to work your way up from a newbie-->Decent-->average player.
