LoL vs DOTA 2

Postby Two » 11 Feb 2011, 14:05

I will be making a series of threads for discussing how DOTA 2 will affect / interact with other existing MOBA games.

So, let's continue with LoL. My opinion is that LoL is a game that has managed to establish a dedicated player base through differentiating from the original DotA game in many aspects. It has a unique look'n'feel and an innovative out-of-game system to support it. LoL too will see some losses in its player base, but not a tremendous one.

LoL is actually the only DotA mimic I have actually tried, tbh it just annoyed me mainly because the camera is locked onto your hero, they have disabled map awareness which just makes the game stupid imo. They also disabled denying creeps which annoyed me a lot, I played 2 games and have never even thought of playing it again. I can see the appeal to some players though, it takes much less focus (mainly because they have disabled map awareness which is what requires most of your focus in DotA), so therefore it is lots easier for newbies

Imo DotA 2 won't take many players from LoL, the majority of them seem to be in love with that game, and I'm not too worried, from what I have seen the only players there are the ones that completely fail at DotA or the ones that have never tried DotA (and of course there are a few players who play both LoL and DotA). So we don't really want them coming over to DotA 2 anyway, chances are they will sit in game crying about how it's different and putting off new players.

I don't know much about the game, but since it has such a devoted community I wouldn't say that it is shit in any case.

Oh, well that kinda makes my main point a bit invalid, but I still dislike the game.

LoL is fun if you are 12 years old or if you really don't care about graphics. The gameplay is good at all, but the "view" you have of it is very childish.
I'm not ofending the LoL players, but I'm showing my point about this game;I really don't like it =(

Like it has been said before, LoL has become a game on its own and can not be seriously considered a dota clone. It will survive after dota 2, unless valve will go out with a hard marketing campaign where they start to bash on riot, but i don't see that happening any time soon.

Yes, the difference between DotA and LoL really shouldn't be a big deal since LoL is not trying to be similar to DotA. If they did that, people would just stick to DotA. LoL offers players something different in terms of gameplay and mechanics.

Yeah, it is really hard to say LoL's a DotA clone.
There is a reason why i prefer LoL over HoN is a few reasons.
LoL has new mechanics in the game which makes it more interesting IMO.
At first when i swapped (not really, i still play DotA), I honestly fucking hated it.
Mainly because I was not use to the mechanics with summoner level system, runes, brushes, summoner skills, no creep deny, etc. This is a big reason why I do not really consider LoL as a clone, and I believe because of these add ons people who are from DotA are not really attracted to it, and prefer the old style of playing because of whole new mechanics you must learn to play the game successfully. After you get use to it, and actually spend time learning it, it is actually a fun game to play.

People say LoL's graphics sucks. Okay. I honestly agree HoN graphics are better, but
graphics =/= game play.

And about the release of DotA 2 impacting the LoL community.
I honestly will say I don't think it will hurt THAT much to Riot.
With the unique play on LoL, I say its another genre of MOBA in general, and people will stay.

Frist of all welcome to our community mate! :) I hope you have a pleasant stay!

As for your post, I totally agree with you. LoL has been and with time has developed into a totally different game than DotA.

LoL is a great game. The summoner meta-game is a bit shit when you don't have the in-game currency for it, but it's really fun making builds and such with runes and masteries. I never get the "DotA is so much more skilled than LoL" argument... all they did was remove creep denying and simplify the jungle (the Jungle in LoL is really cool imo, with the Blue and Red buffs). Apart from creep denying it has everything else tactical and strategic in DotA except town portal scrolls (but replaces it with a free recall system, which I prefer tbh).

The bushes/brush is a really great addition to the genre and I definitely wouldn't mind at all if Dota 2 tried new features like this. So many people are like 'OMG WE CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!! NOT EVEN THE NAMES!!!!' or saying that skins would be a bad idea. Pffft, it's ridiculous. Riot have added good things to the genre and that's why LoL stands out over HoN.

I don't get the hating on graphics, on full settings it looks great... although a bit too much visual clutter if you ask me.

The reason I'd switch to Dota 2 is because Valve are incredible. The polish this game will have, and the style... oh man it's gonna rule. The thing I'm most excited about is the inclusion of inter-hero conversations during the game! That's gonna be so cool haha. Riot are also complete and utter fail with their servers and customer service. All the new champions they introduce are starting to blend together too (tanky DPS every other champion, no fun tanks etc.).

I like a lot of the stuff in LoL but the graphics and art is too childish, I don't feel confortable inviting my friends to play it because some of the artwork like Rumble's looks like it was made for 12 year olds. All the Champions are starting to mix together and they are making new ones for high prices that are the same exact concept of ones they already made. The older group (people who actually have money) will probably go to DotA2. The little kids who don't have money to buy DotA2 or RP will probably stay and play LoL.
LoL's tourney scene will probably die b/c riot doesn't balence before releases and they make a new champ every 2 weeks.
New players probably won't start playing LoL after DotA2 b/c they have too many champions and it will take forever to get on the same level as old players or people who want to spend a lot of money to buy all the champs.

I really don't get why there is so many people that bash the graphics of LoL. I hate all types of anime/manga but I really can't compare them to LoL like so many do. I mean there is like over 12 million people that play WoW which has really shitty and childish graphics but that is not what makes the game good or bad imo. I always say Game play > Graphics.

LoL have added lots of new aspects and a whole new system to the genre and I like some of them and some I don't. I really like that they did add new stuff and not just copy almost everything from DotA like HoN did. As other people have mentioned is that LoL is not a copy of DotA and most HoN fan bois and DotA players expect it to be similar and be the same but LoL is something complete different, I've seen people say it is like CS vs COD or CS vs Quake etc and you can't really say one is better than the other when they are so different.

I think I am one of the few that actually enjoy playing all of the the games LoL, DotA and HoN. I've never played any competitive in HoN or DotA since I am quite new to these games but I've played some competitive LoL. LoL actually has a great competitive scene, I remember the first Go4LoL cups on ESL which there was quite some people participating in, now there is even more people and the cup is every Sunday. And the LoL community have many streamers that stream their games and tournaments EVERY day, I've seen up to over 30k people watching one popular LoL streamer and that is a lot of people. The most popular streamers have at least 3-6k people watching all the time.

When it comes to LoL and DOTA 2 I will have to agree with what some of you already said. That DOTA 2 will effect some of the LoL playerbase but I still think LoL will survive since it is quite unique. LoL is also free to play so it will always attract does who want to try out the genre and other people that just don't want to spend money I guess.
This is basically what some people already said but oh well.

Well written, great points. Totally agree on every point. LoL gameplay is great. They put in fantastic ideas that have played out well. I used to play Dota, but switched to LoL in the past year.

With LoL's utter fail servers, I understand why they are having these problems, and just throwing money at it isn't going to do anything but the problem is, it happens EVERY week. At a certain point, things need to move forward. They keep promising to fix it, but it's almost guaranteed a server fail every Tuesday, almost like a WoW maintenance day, but WoW maintenance isn't a wide spread fail every Tuesday, they have one or two hiccups, especially in the big patches/expansions, but is fixed. (Yes I understand the huge difference in staff size/ability of the two companies).

The second and last point I want to emphasize of Warboys's is the customer service. I've never heard of a reporting actually doing anything, account suspensions, bans, nothing. I'm not sure if I've had a day without someone leaving, and when I check their profile later, they have over 200 leaves. Because this knowledge that reporting does nothing, nothing is changed everybody keeps leaving.

I may be ranting because I got to log on once and then matchmaking failed yesterday (Tuesday), fluctuating queues (20mins->10mins->2hours->5mins->1hour), servers being down, being logged in but not being able to do anything, but I will definitely be switching over to Dota2. Valve's polish and professionalism definitely two main points I will be looking forward to. I know I'm not the only one. I have a feeling LoL's gonna drop like a rock. If they want to float they better step their game up, they've had plenty of quarters to fix things up to this point and they've only got a couple quarters left before judgement day.
